@jonathan1 : "Hope it’s just temporary hiatus." better not count on it...

@Kea : "it might not happen." Thanks for keeping my feet on the ground (and for support over the years).

@jonathan2 : who claims this site isnt getting 15,000,000 hits a year?? Seriously, I appreciate the support, but it wont change a thing, I can only do a thing for as long as I can see a point to it.

Im in the process of packing the car to drive 1000km south, after one funeral too many in the last few months. its unlikely ill be posting soon but if i do it will probably be a story about love and death. there are one or two things more important in life than mathematics,,,

atb for now :: lieven.

Grothendieck is one matter (I'd love to see a feature film about him!). This blog is another. There are fascinating geniuses who don't blog. There are boring fools who do blog. What matter is that this blog has been consistently wonderful. I am not naive about what effort it takes to be popular on the web. My web domain is 13 years old, and gets over 15,000,000 hits per year. Lieven le Bruyn's blog is unlikely ever to get that kind of traffic, yet is a must-read for me, and I already am sad that it will be gone.

Great idea! I hope enough mathematicians step up to your excellent offer. But if the low popularity of the Petition to bring Grothendieck out of exile is any guide, it might not happen.

Yay, for now through 1 Jan 09. Will miss your blog thereafter. Hope it's just temporary hiatus.

I heard tales of Emmy Noether from the 2nd greatest woman mathematician of 2oth century, Olga Tuassky-Todd. The two met and spoke with deep empathy. Don't know if that was documented.
