Blackle

There seems to be a slight chance that the next US-administration may (finally) be joining the rest of the civilized world and sign the Kyoto-treaty. Here’s an appeal to Flock and other webbrowsers : please add blackle.com to our Search Engine Preferences!

The idea is simple : you Google as you’d do anyway but … you save a lot of energy. Via PD2 (for Pseudonymous Daughter 2).

From what I understand, the energy saving (or otherwise) of Blackle is highly dependent on the type of monitor you have. With LCD monitors for instance if your brightness and contrast are not set correctly you will actually use more energy with Blackle. It’s definitely a great idea and a vital thing to be thinking of but it’s important to make sure you’re actually making a difference rather than just feeling virtuous :-)

I prefer using Darkoogle http://www.darkoogle.com another black Google and is available in over 40 countries http://www.darkoogle.com/international

Best of all its got the ’similar page’ option in the result page like the normal white Google. I use that a lot.

Not a bad idea if it actually work. Personally I prefer http://www.regrowgle.com – maybe not as sexy yet, but all profit generated from people searching gets reinvested into “green” projects such as forest regeneration.

This way at least something is put back into the environment to make up for the resources we use – and as a user it costs us absolutely NOTHING.

I find this proactive approach better than saying “something helps the environment” when in fact it does little to nothing.

More options will come soon to make it more similar/familiar like the Google layout.

There are around 25 different versions of “black google” online. The best one I’ve found is http://www.cleanblack.com. Cleanblack is the only version that allows you to change the text colors of the google search results. Try it yourself by going to http://www.cleanblack.com/theme/
